Why wearing the wrong thing matters more in the desert than you'd think
Two things make Dubai desert wear different from city wear: the sand and the temperature swing. Sand at speed (in a buggy or quad convoy) acts like fine grit — it works into open shoes, exposed skin, and any loose fabric. The temperature can swing 15-20°C between mid-day and post-sunset in winter, so the right outfit at 14:30 pickup can be the wrong outfit at 21:00 drop-off. Closed-toe shoes are the only non-negotiable rule (the briefing team turns away open footwear). Everything else is comfort and prevention.
What to wear by activity
| Activity | Footwear | Top | Bottom | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dune buggy | Closed-toe shoes (trainers fine) | Long sleeves preferred | Long trousers | Helmet + goggles provided; bring zipped pocket for phone |
| Quad bike | Closed-toe shoes mandatory | Long sleeves to prevent sunburn | Long trousers | Buff/scarf for neck against wind |
| Desert safari (4x4) | Closed-toe shoes for the camp | Casual long sleeves | Comfortable trousers | Light scarf for camp evening (winter), sunglasses |
| Hot air balloon | Closed-toe shoes for landing | Layers — basket warm, ground cool | Long trousers | Light jacket you can shed; phone strap |
| Camel ride | Any closed shoes | Long sleeves modest cover | Long trousers / jeans (saddle pad chafes shorts) | No loose sleeves near camel's mouth |
| Dirt biking | Motocross boots provided | Long-sleeve athletic top under armour | Long athletic trousers | Body armour provided; bring complete change of clothes |
Summer (May-September) wear
- Sweat-wicking athletic top (not cotton — cotton holds sweat).
- Lightweight long trousers — desert UV bounces off sand, exposed skin burns fast.
- Hat or scarf for the transfer and any non-helmet outdoor time.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — apply before pickup, reapply at the staging area.
- Sunglasses with a strap if you're on the buggy/quad (helmet goggles cover the ride itself).
- A second water bottle in addition to what we provide.
- Light cotton scarf or buff — useful for face cover in summer wind.
Winter (October-April) wear
- Layers — daytime can be 25°C, post-sunset can drop to 12-15°C in the desert.
- Light long-sleeve top under a fleece or thin jacket.
- Long trousers — denim is fine; thin-fabric trousers can let cold through after sunset.
- Closed-toe shoes — same rule as summer.
- Light scarf for the camp evening or balloon basket.
- Sunscreen still matters — winter UV in Dubai is still significant.
- If your booking is dawn or post-sunset, bring a thicker jacket; the desert at 06:00 and 21:00 in January reads 12-14°C.
What NOT to wear (turned away at briefing)
- Open-toe sandals or flip-flops — refused on every active booking.
- High heels — refused. Yes, this happens.
- Very short shorts or skirts on a camel ride (saddle pad chafes).
- Sleeveless tops on quad/buggy/dirt — sunburn and sand impact risk.
- Loose dangling jewellery near a camel's mouth or near a buggy's harness.
- Cotton T-shirt as the only top in summer dirt-biking — sweat under armour causes friction burns. Wear sweat-wicking.
Sand cleanup — what to expect
Fine red sand finds its way into everything — pockets, shoes, hair, phone case, camera body. After a buggy or quad ride you'll find sand for the next 2-3 days no matter how careful you are. Pack a change of clothes for after the ride, especially if you have an evening dinner planned. Phone cases get sandy; wipe before plugging in a charger. Camera shutter mechanisms can ingest sand — if you brought a DSLR, change lenses indoors at the hotel, not at the staging area. Most of this is only an issue on active rides (buggy/quad/dirt); the desert safari 4x4 is air-conditioned and the camp is mostly clean.
